Fordham asks more of a car than most Bronx neighborhoods do. You are threading a shopping district that draws people in from three boroughs, sharing the road with buses that stop every other block, and hunting for a legal space in the few streets where one exists. Glass damage here rarely comes from anything dramatic. It accumulates: a stone off a truck on Webster Avenue, a mirror clipped while squeezing past a double-parked van, a chip that has been quietly widening since spring. What people want from us is the appointment to be simple, and that is mostly a question of when we are open.

The damage pattern here is a low-speed one, which surprises people. Very little of it comes from highway stones. It comes from working a car through a dense commercial district: mirrors and vent glass caught on the corner of a parked box truck, a quarter window taken out backing into a tight space off Crescent Avenue, a door glass smashed by somebody who saw shopping bags on the seat. From Fordham Plaza, head west on East Fordham Road, cross the Grand Concourse, and stay with it as it becomes West Fordham Road. Turn left onto Jerome Avenue and follow the elevated tracks south for a few blocks. We are on the right at 2080, just before West Burnside Avenue. Allow eight to ten minutes, more when the strip is at its worst on a Saturday. If Fordham Road is stopped, drop down Webster Avenue to East Burnside Avenue and take that west across the Concourse instead, which is often the quicker of the two.
