Pelham Bay Park sits just over the city line on the Bronx side, which is the marker most people use for where Westchester begins. The Hutch is the main culprit around here. It is a parkway, so no trucks, but it is old and tight and lined with mature trees that shed limbs and grit onto the roadway, and the sand crews spread in winter comes right back up off the tires of the car ahead of you. Boston Post Road supplies a second source: stop-and-go traffic over steel construction plates, with gravel flung off the shoulders by cars accelerating away from the lights. Then there is temperature. Cars left out overnight on the village streets sit cold for hours, and blasting a frozen windshield with the defroster on full is what turns a quarter-sized chip into a crack that has run halfway across the glass before you reach Pelhamdale Avenue.
Take the Hutchinson River Parkway south out of the village to the Cross Bronx Expressway, then head west across to the Jerome Avenue exit, roughly twenty to twenty-five minutes. From Pelham Manor, running Boston Post Road down to the parkway entrance saves you a string of local lights. We are at 2080 Jerome Avenue, under the elevated 4 train just north of where the Cross Bronx cuts through, and the Major Deegan Expressway is a few minutes west if you loop back that way. For the van heading the other direction, the Hutch does not allow commercial plates, so we come up I-95 or on surface streets, which adds minutes but not dollars.
