Two things do most of the damage down here: the Bruckner and the water. Trucks coming off the expressway ramps drop gravel and broken asphalt onto Bruckner Boulevard, and anything kicked up there lands on the car behind at highway speed. Salt air comes off the East River and the mouth of the Bronx River, works into the pinchweld and the window channels, and rust under an old urethane bead is why some replacements here take longer than a clean job would. From Soundview it runs about five miles and fifteen minutes. Take Soundview Avenue north to the Bruckner, get on the expressway west, then pick up the Cross Bronx and stay with it to the Jerome Avenue exits. We are at 2080 Jerome Avenue, under the elevated 4 train, a block from West Burnside Avenue and two blocks west of the Grand Concourse. Coming back late from the ferry, the same trip is closer to eighteen. If the drive is the part you cannot spare, the van comes to you instead. It carries the glass, urethane and tools, and it only needs a legal spot with a little room on either side, which the long curbs off Story Avenue usually have.

The streets around Clason Point have that kind of room.
