The city line is the only thing between Yonkers and this shop, and it barely slows the trip. The Major Deegan turns into the Thruway right where Yonkers begins, so the run from the Fordham Road ramps up to Yonkers Avenue or McLean Avenue takes fifteen or twenty minutes in ordinary traffic. Evening and weekend work is normal here rather than a favor. Retail schedules around the Cross County Shopping Center and Ridge Hill, plus the late hours people keep at Empire City, mean a lot of Yonkers drivers cannot give up a Tuesday morning. Yonkers drives like two places stacked on each other. Winter is hard on glass here because the hills get treated heavily. Sand and salt spread on the streets above Broadway ends up under tires and thrown at whoever is behind, and by March a lot of windshields up there carry a haze of pitting that turns oncoming headlights into a wall. The Thruway and Deegan stretch north of the line is the other big source, six lanes of trucks running with stone caught in the treads. Temperature does the rest. A car left on a west-facing hillside bakes all afternoon, and a chip that has been quietly holding since November splits open when sun hits cold glass. Parking lots at the big centers add their own share, with cart strikes and swung doors that take out quarter glass rather than windshields.
Getting down to Jerome Avenue is basically one road. Pick up the Thruway or the Deegan wherever it suits you, whether that is Yonkers Avenue, McLean Avenue or the Cross County interchange, run south past the city line and come off at the Fordham Road ramps. From there it is a right onto Jerome and a short stretch south under the elevated tracks to number 2080. Fifteen to twenty minutes is normal, so add a few in the afternoon. If the drive itself is the obstacle, say so on the phone and the van heads north instead, which suits the driveways in the flats and any house with a level spot out front.
